Gentoo Proshield combines high water contact angle (over roughly 110°) with an extremely high repellency to many oils, fuels, acids and bases, so mud, oily road film and contaminants release easily.

Ceramic coatings give strong water beading and easier washing but are less aggressive in repelling oils and some organic contaminants than purpose‑designed oleophobic layers and hydrophobic coating like Gentoo Pro Shield and do not offer a 5year life cycle for the coating.

Galvanic Corrosion, Road Salt electrolyte

When road salt mixes with moisture, it becomes an electrolyte, triggering galvanic corrosion. This process is highly aggressive at contact points between dissimilar materials, such as aluminum/carbon interfaces (e.g., bottom bracket shells, cable stops, and derailleur hangers).


Oxidation Acceleration: Salts strip the protective oxide layer from aluminum, causing it to corrode into a white, chalky powder that can weaken structural components like dropouts or hubs. On steel frames, salt rapidly accelerates the formation of iron oxide (rust), which can eventually lead to structural failure.


Hygroscopic Damage: These salts are hygroscopic, meaning they actively attract moisture from the air even after the bike is dry, keeping the metal in a constant state of corrosion during storage.

Brake and Tyre-Derived Particulates

Abrasive Heavy Metals: Found on all roads in mud and dirt, dust from vehicle brake pads contains high concentrations of copper, iron, and zinc. These fine metallic particles are abrasive and can get embedded in frame crevices or moving parts, acting as a catalyst for local corrosion.

Brake Dust Deposits: Again found on all roads, this "grimy powder" is more than a nuisance; it often carries acidic or chemical residues that can stain or pit the finish of unprotected aluminum components and anodized parts.

Petroleum Runoff and Industrial Pollutants

Finish Degradation: Road spray often contains oils, fuel residues, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These can soften or "cloud" the lacquer and protective paints on carbon fiber frames, potentially exposing the resin-fiber matrix to environmental damage.


Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): These toxic compounds from asphalt and exhaust bind to road grit, creating a persistent, sticky "gunk" that traps corrosive moisture against the frame.

 
Sweat (Physiological Salts)
Concentrated Chloride: For riders using indoor trainers or in extreme heat, sweat provides a constant source of concentrated sodium chloride. It is particularly damaging to aluminum handlebars (often hidden under tape) and headset bearings, where it can cause hidden "pitting" and catastrophic failure.

Acidic Compounds found on roads.

While salts are the most commonly cited threat, several acidic compounds found on modern roads can directly damage a bike’s frame, paint, and exposed metal.

Atmospheric and "Acid Rain" Derivatives Sulfuric Acid (\(H_{2}SO_{4}\)): Produced when sulfur dioxide from vehicle exhaust reacts with moisture in the air. It is highly corrosive to metals and can lead to pitting on unprotected aluminum or steel parts. 

Nitric Acid (\(HNO_{3}\)): Formed from nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by combustion engines. Nitric acid can attack the finish and protective resins of a bike; while carbon fiber itself is relatively resistant, prolonged exposure to high concentrations can eventually damage the surface resin matrix. 

Organic Acids from Vehicle Wear Benzoic and Oleic Acids: These are organic acids found in brake lining dust and tire wear. When mixed with road spray, they form an acidic sludge that can sit in crevices, such as around the bottom bracket or headset, slowly eating away at protective coatings.

Alkanoic and Fatty Acids: Also derived from tire and brake wear, these contribute to the overall acidic nature of "road gunk," which can stain paint and accelerate the oxidation of exposed aluminum.

Anthropogenic Secondary Acids Carbonic Acid (\(H_{2}CO_{3}\)): Though a weak acid, it is formed when \(CO_{2}\) (a primary exhaust product) dissolves in road puddles. It contributes to the general "acidification" of road runoff, which can slowly degrade anodized finishes on high-end components.

Cleaning Product Residue: Not naturally on the road, but often introduced by maintenance. Strong degreasers or acidic cleaners (like some rust removers) can be more harmful than road grime if not thoroughly rinsed, as they can cause hydrogen embrittlement in steel or "clouding" in carbon fiber clear coats.
